Product description

The Helicopter (also known as the “Aerial Screw”) is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most iconic drawings. This historically accurate working recreation uses a bevel gear, also from da Vinci’s drawings, to spin the canopy and support structure, illustrating a way he thought flight might be possible.

Leonardo da Vinci was a prolific inventor and artist who came up with new ideas and redesigned inventions from earlier times. While it is often referred to as a helicopter, the 15th-century Aerial Screw was designed to rise much like an Archimedean screw rather than a helicopter.

The canopy and support structure is removable, so children can experiment with their own helicopter or other winged systems. This model is made from natural, untreated wood from sustainable forests.

All pieces are pre-cut and pegged for extra strength. Children can make this model in about an hour. Build a working model of da Vinci’s helicopter. All pieces are pre-cut and pegged for extra strength.

Can be made in about an hour. Great for beginner builders. For ages 9 and up.Size: Finished helicopter: 9″L x 15″H

From the Manufacturer

Flying has always been a dream of humans, and Leonardo’s fascination with birds and flight was evident in his studies of birds and different human powered flying machines.

His Ornithopter design has captured the imagination of people for generations, and we have combined his cool flying machine with one of his bevel gear designs to make a neat model with flapping wings and a pilot with moving legs and arms.
